How do therapy sessions work?

THE FIRST SESSION

The first session is an opportunity for us to get to know one another. During this session, I will listen to your concerns and explore your goals and aims from therapy. You will get an understanding of how I might work with you to help you address the issues which concern you. You will experience my working style and have the opportunity to ask any questions. If I think my service is not suitable for you, I will be pleased to recommend alternative sources of help that may be more appropriate for your needs.

HOW MANY COUNSELLING SESSIONS WILL I NEED?

Because every individual is unique with different circumstances, it is very difficult to say how many sessions will be required. It really depends on the nature of the issues that come up within the sessions and how you respond to these. Because of this, I avoid tying clients to a set number of sessions that they must attend. Instead, I prefer to give an idea of how many sessions it might be with the view that this could change. I believe clients know when they have achieved the outcome they want, so I like to work with you session by session. As you progress, you can decide when you have had the number of sessions that works best for you.

Many people like to know exactly how many sessions they might require to achieve their goals. Some people want to work within a set time frame for a set number of sessions. I can help give you an idea of what can be achieved, within different time frames and work within those with you.

HOW LONG IS A PSYCHOTHERAPY / COUNSELLING SESSION?

A standard therapy session lasts 50 minutes – you can do a one-off, weekly, fortnightly, twice-weekly or ad hoc depending on what works best for you.

How do I work?

There are many different styles of counsellors and different approaches to counselling. I am very lucky to be trained as an ‘Integrative Counsellor’, which means I have the beauty of being able to integrate many different approaches into my practice. I am therefore not restricted to just one approach. I love this because it allows me the flexibility to be able to tailor my approach to suit each individual. I very much believe that one size does not fit all, and I treat every client individually. The interventions that I use will be discussed and agreed with you before-hand and you will very much be an active participant in this. I always follow my clients lead and adapt my style to suit you.

Throughout our sessions, my aim is to provide you with the tools you need to manage the challenges you are dealing with. I can help you understand problems from new perspectives and discover ways of managing difficult situations better. I provide education, understanding and proactive tools which you can utilise to implement positive change. I never tell clients what to do or offer my opinion on a certain situation or experience. My approach is a process of self-discovery and personal reflection. I provide a safe, non-judgemental space for clients to open up and explore their experiences and feelings.
